An underground economy for unapproved weight-loss drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.

The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its supposed weight-reducing properties. Viewers are urged to message these accounts directly for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.

Additionally, a robust market exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” images, administration instructions and claims of rapid British shipping. Vendors market the substance there before directing buyers to other platforms for transactions.

This medication is an experimental injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies suggest it could assist patients reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the successor to Ozempic.

Nevertheless, physicians and chemists have warned that the sale of what is still an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in individuals administering substances of uncertain source.

Several experts said the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the rising price of approved slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.

Some influencers attempt to sidestep the rules by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but advertising and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and customer laws, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or prison.

After minutes of joining one group, a seller shared contact information, where the majority of transactions take place. The seller provided an guidebook and promised shipping within two days. When asked whether the substance was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one inquired about weight, medical conditions or past usage.

Inside these communities, posts show dark colored parcels with postal service labels, claiming to include new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors usually sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how long a pen should be used, sellers give conflicting answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

“People are injecting materials they can’t verify. Even if the research behind this drug is valid, these online products may not contain what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in interest to current cost increases for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are using online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are extremely risky. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she explained.

Her team has previously seen individuals injured by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is gambling with your well-being,” stated the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”

Manufacturer Position

A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in phase 3 clinical trials and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet authorized … may subject patients to potentially significant health risks”.
