Approximately 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Police state they were notified late on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then found many other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state early analysis show the substance was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; authorities are currently not informed of any physical harm in association with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the community for details.
An important political figure commented the incident left him without words and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he stated on a platform, referring to the death of nine victims by a shooter aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
